But a recent survey shows that a large proportion of the UK population isn't doing enough exercise, with the associated costs to the NHS reaching £1.2 billion in 2017 alone, say the researchers. Barriers to return-to-play centered on policy-level influences, including high costs of and limited access to medical treatment and lack of clarity or specification in state laws regarding which medical professionals can, or should, provide return-to-play clearance. By identifying intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational and policy-level barriers to the implementation of state concussion laws at the school level, effective implementation strategies can be developed to increase the public health impact of these laws. A new study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI) at Nationwide Children's Hospital investigated the barriers high schools across the country face when implementing state concussion laws. The study, published today in Journal of Adolescent Health, found that many high schools reported challenges implementing and enforcing the three main parts of state concussion laws. Earlier this week, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine released a new survey that found that many Americans are letting entertainment get in the way of a good night's sleep.

Previous work by this team found an association between sleeping too much or too little or having disturbed sleep and recurrent falls and fractures. There was this ethic of sacrifice in homes and schools that you don't see nearly as much anymore. The study compared how often parents and teens discussed strengths and weaknesses alongside how well the two communicate, how much the teen discloses to the parent, and how close the parent and teen were.
They then compared advertising strategies with teens' intention to drink as an adult and current alcohol consumption. But when these figures were compared with thresholds for clinical "meaningfulness," the changes didn't reach these thresholds. In other words, the size of the changes was small, rendering their impact unclear. Previous work has shown a connection between short sleep and hormonal and metabolic changes as well as inflammation. In the study, which was published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, researchers described the relationship between short sleep and bone health as "modest" and said it was equivalent to a year of aging. The study, published by the journal Addictive Behaviors Reports, is one of the first to examine the relationship among advertising budgets, underage drinking and brand awareness.
The research, which recently appeared in the November issue of the Journal of Affective Disorders, examined the link between self-reported history of concussion and risk factors for suicide completion. The study examined survey data collected from more than 13,000 high school students in the United States. It was the first study to include a nationally representative sample of high school students. Approximately 15% of students surveyed reported having suffered a concussion. Researchers discovered that teenagers who reported having a concussion in the last year were more likely to report feelings of depression, suicidal ideations, and planned or previous suicide attempts. Participants were asked if they had received a concussion related to sports or physical activity in the last year, as well as a range of questions to measure potential suicidal behaviors.
